The Beach Bike Ride for Charity was founded in 2010 by a pair of Wells resident families and a couple of young sports/technology enthusiasts looking to give something back to the community.
The Beach Bike Ride concept was founded with the mission of bringing the local community of Wells together with the summer resident community to help causes that impact the town.
The ride has been a huge success. In it’s first year the ride attracted over fifty riders and raised over $8,000. In the years that followed, the ridership has increased to over 125 riders each year raising a grand total of $40,000 for charity in four years.
Private and commercial sponsors donated cash, goods and services to help build the event and position it for future success. All donations are given directly to charity. Administrative expenses are also donated by sponsors.
For the first three years, the Beach Bike Ride has been a meaningful supporter of the Be Like Brit Foundation helping their efforts to build an orphanage in Grand Guave, Haiti. The orphanage is being built to honor the last wishes of Britney Gengel, a Wells summer resident who was tragically killed in the 2010 Haiti earthquake while on a college mission trip there.
Britney’s father Len is a home builder who has constructed several homes in the Wells area, one of which they occupy in the summer months. Len is using all available resources from friends, family and trades to build this earthquake-proof orphanage. It is now open and will house 66 Haitian orphans providing food, housing and education. The orphanage will also house a much needed medical clinic to be made available to residents of Grand Guave.
In 2014, the Beach Bike Ride is excited to partner with the American Cancer Society again for the second consecutive year. As such, proceeds from this year’s Beach Bike Ride will be dedicated to helping cancer patients throughout the State of Maine. “This dreaded disease affects many within our community and will be an equally worthy cause for our ride,” stated Mike Fairweather, a spokesman for the Beach Bike Ride.
